Herniated Disc Repair

The small spongy discs that cushion the bones (or vertebrae) that form the spine are called “discs.” They act as shock absorbers for the spine, keeping it flexible. A disc that bulges or breaks is called a herniated, slipped, or ruptured disc.

A person experiencing a herniated disc may feel pain, weakness, or numbness in their back. Sciatica is the most common symptom of a herniated disc in the lower back region. This can cause the buttocks and legs to feel pain or numbness.

Herniated discs may be diagnosed by symptoms and examinations, but in some cases, the doctor may need to run tests such as an MRI or CT scan to confirm.

A patient can recover from a herniated disc within a few weeks or months through helpful exercises or physical therapy. Heating pads and warm showers can help sooth some of the pain and medicine can be prescribed to help with swelling or pain.
